Interpreting Home
Understanding life during lockdown through ethnographic research
Objective
The objective of this research is to gain an understanding of the role that the home plays in the lives of young people (aged between 20 to 25 years old) during and after the COVID-19 lockdown.
Intent
To identify and map new innovations and behavioral patterns that people are developing to cope with the challenges of being confined to their homes through digital ethnography.
Timeline
The research was conducted in July 2020.
My role
As a design researcher, I conducted research with 13 young people aged 20 to 25 over the course of three weeks. We used a variety of research methods, including:
- Desk research to review existing content on the impacts of the lockdown on people's lives.
- A photovoice experiment (ethnography method) over three days to understand how the lockdown has affected participants' lives.
- An online survey to collect quantitative data on participants' behavior patterns and daily routines.

- Space mapping and photo participation (digital ethnography methods) to gain an in-depth understanding of participants' homes, as physical visits were not feasible.
