Final Project of the First Year. Our task was to design a Building with Performance Art Space on the slope located in Little Burleigh in Gold Coast. I designed a walk-in experience space, where a whole building is an actual performance. It consists of 3 cone-shaped building covered with tensile, providing outdoor shading. Chosen performance is Contemporary Dancing.
Each of the cones lets in less and less sunlight, which makes the sun playing crucial role in the whole performance. As the rooms get darker, the style of dancing also changes. The movement becomes more weird and chaotic.
In the first room, movement is very delicate and fluid, dancers wear bright colors, blending in with the natural sunlight.
Second room becomes darker, also the light creates interesting shapes, lightning up only stages for the dancers.
In the last room, there is a complete darkness. Performers are painted with neon colors, which creates an illusion of the shapes dancing instead of people.
Entry to the building is located on top of the hill, on the roof of the first cone, which also provides rooftop balcony with a view towards the ocean and the city. Afterwards, from the roof, long stairs lead into the first room of the performance.
Whole building consists of 4 different levels, connected with curved staircase, which also blocks out the sunlight from one room to another. Backstage is provided with a separate entry, and separate staircase, that leads to each one of the rooms, not disturbing the experience of the performance. Building is very thoroughly incorporated into the slope, as different levels of the rooms and backstage are following its shape.
