India has a vast population of homeless dogs. In 2001, India adopted the Animal Birth Control program (ABC) to curb the numbers through spaying and neutering. The clipped ear below (right ear) is a marker for a sterilized dog.
Let's take the city of Mumbai.
From rough observations, I've made over the years 1 or 2 out of 10 dogs are not sterilized (in urban areas, the number would be a lot higher in rural areas). That may not seem like a very large number, but to successively witness a drop in the number of homeless dogs, we have to stop them from procreating. Not to mention that life on the streets for a young litter is extremely difficult.
My approach is to add animal lovers and volunteers like me, into the process. Being spaced out all over the city, we can look out for unclipped ears in different areas; take time to build a rapport with the dog and lay the ground work for its pick-up.
My suggested plan would work like this:
A basic GPS tracking collar that transmits its location signals to verified cellular phones.
The volunteer and the NGO can keep tabs on the tagged dogs through an app.
A hypothetical scenario of the dog tagging, collaring and pick-up would look like this:
The volunteer signs into the app, and it displays available collars at the closest NGO. They apply for the collar and await confirmation before going to pick it up.
