SYNTHWAVE PROJECT
PREPARATION FOR PROJECT
The beginning of the Synthwave project was focused on collecting images for inspiration. I wanted to focus on mainly Galaga to animate, despite being popular, as that was a game I had played more heavily compared to the other arcade games, and one I had very fond memories of.
Collection of arcade cabinets and games [Galaga, Donkey Kong, Mrs. Pac-Man, etc], for the purpose of familiarize myself with a wide variety of games
PHASE 1
Phase 1 of the Synthwave project began with gathering assets and creating gif images sequences in order to animate them for the projected canvas. I found a Galaga asset sheet that I turned transparent and used to create my gif animations.
Gif animations, including unused assets, created for the animations that will be created mainly in phase 3.
Initial Galaga animation mockup. This animation was later edited to flow better. Additionally, the animation had to be fixed as the video was in the incorrect aspect ratio.
PHASE 2
For Phase 2, the animation created needed to be rendered as a transparent file, which was done by exporting the animation as a Quicktime .mov file.
PHASE 3
Phase 3 of the SynthWave project required three animations to either be created or retouched. During this process, I used the incorrect aspect ratio, and had to retouch most of my animations to have them fit the canvas properly.
For the final part of phase 3, we had to create a projection to go on the side of the Winship building, using a different asset that represented the layout of the building. For this, I wanted to animate something other than the Galaga assets I had created, and instead used assets from other students uploaded to the shared box folder.
I settled on using Pac-Man for the building animation, as I thought it would look the best and fit into the side of the building I wanted to project on.
