D&AD: BBC Bigger Picture

Web Design
The BBC reaches over 250 million users a week, it is time that all of their voices were heard. The BBC Bigger Picture provides a unique platform to generate, develop and engage with news as it happens. Users can now share their perspectives on stories, find news developing on a global scale or in their community, and tailor their own experience so they will never miss a beat. User-generated content now fuels the news as people share photos and write articles to connect the World like never before, making them part of the bigger picture.
Launching the BBC Bigger Picture app takes you straight to today's headline stories from across the World. Popular content and breaking news will be carried on larger tiles to mirror the relative importance of each story, whilst smaller tiles ensure that no news article is overlooked. Hold down the home button to filter the news that matters to you through nine categories, or preview articles by extending the handles on their tile in either direction.
Sometimes it is easier to keep up to date with news on a global level, but unfortunately miss out on stories that are developing around you locally; with the GPS news tracker, that problem will be a thing
of the past. Keep up to date with every story around you, no matter where you are in the World, or search for a country, city or address and gain access to stories that are developing in that area. This feature brings local news to the global platform; local stories will never be unnoticed again.
View articles and watch how they develop through the eyes of people that are there. If a news story is directly affecting you, upload your own photo and share your views; alternatively if the BBC has not yet covered a story developing in your area, write an article yourself so others can be kept up to date on their Local feeds. The Like and Report features ensure that the best and most relevant user-generated content available takes centre stage.
When breaking news hits the World we all want to stay in the loop and be the first to know about any developments, now we can. With every event filed under an appropriate hashtag users can access every story within that archive to get up to date. Photo reactions from the World’s users give a previously unseen perspective on developing stories, and users now also have the chance to follow stories so
they will never miss out on any future developments.
Every user that becomes part of the BBC Bigger Picture has the option to create their own personalised news feed. This feed is populated with stories that the user has saved (which are available offline), updates on stories that the user is following, articles that the user’s friends have written, and stories
that are recommended for the user based on what they are currently following and items that they have saved. This gives everyone the ability to tailor their own news and experience it in a more personal way.
Breaking news is often a talking point between friends, now you’ll never be the last to know about a story. See the stories that your friends have contributed to or have written themselves, photos they
have liked or commented on, or other newsworthy items from across the World that they have shared.
Be inspired by the people around you and engage with them in a new way.
If you have a spare five minutes, or want to discover something different, the BBC Bigger Picture offers users the chance to shuffle stories. This gives the user a combination of randomised global stories, local stories, stories shared by friends, and user-generated content from across the World. An entire world of news is at everyone’s fingertips, and Shuffle gives everyone the opportunity to get an insight into what
is happening, no matter where they are.
Functionality is key in today’s multimedia society, which is why the BBC Bigger Picture offers integration across every platform. Seamlessly embedded video and audio throughout articles means that users can switch between features in whatever way suits them best. Watch reports on stories you are interested in, listen to BBC’s audio coverage on the go, or read an article published by BBC journalists or other users from across the World. You’ll never experience the News in the same way again.
