Terril is a speculative project in which furniture manufacturers are looking for alternative solutions to problems such as limited availability of raw materials and rising prices. By combining techniques from industry 4.0 with creative materials, we can breathe new life into the furniture industry.
The pulp of which this table is made is based on natural ingredients, originating from Belgian soil. Seeds are mixed into the pulp. With the help of processed nutrients, these seeds will grow into green furniture. The shape of the furniture is obtained through 3D printing. This technique makes it possible to shape this unusual material in an efficient way. It also facilitates personalisation. As the introduction of a new shape requires only a new CAD-file, the costs are greatly reduced.
Once printed and dried, the furniture is fitted with a glass plate. Glass, like our pulp, is a material that can be produced entirely in Belgium, allowing us to keep the entire process local. In addition, the transparency ensures that the greenery is visible from every angle. After this addition, the furniture is ready for sale.  Once bought, you can start using it right away. As time goes by, the plants will enrich the pulp and take over its supporting function, resulting in a beautiful green and durable piece of furniture. Growing your furniture at home is not only space saving for the producer but also has an emotional added value
