Gender in Magazine Design
Bachelor Thesis exploring gender and design

What is the connection between gender and design?
How do the current controversies surrounding gender equality influence the design world?
What lessons can be learned by including gender in the everyday design practice?

This bachelor thesis consists of three individual parts, all presented in one sleek and branded box.
All three parts share the same branding in terms of layout, color and typography.

Starting out with an analysis of six German consumer publications, I took a deeper look at the current state of the consideration of gender in editorial design. The analysed magazines were used as samples and had to meet certain predefined criteria. As a result I was able to identify a somewhat present, but not optimal consideration.

Due to the extent of the analyses, their full results were made available in a separate booklet included in the box.

Following the analyses, their results were taken as a basis for a guide targeting designers and their professional routines. Instead of dictating regulations and rules, the guide aims at prividing assistance and giving useful tips and tricks for including gender in design.

The guide uses the analysis criteria from the first part of the thesis as a common thread and thereby divides the tips and tricks into individual chapters for easy reference.
