Butan Heritage Range

Butan are an African streetwear label with strong African narratives that talk to the past, present and future of culture, fashion and the spirit of the youth on the continent. For them, every garment is treated as a piece of art.  This pattern rich collection paid homage to the traditional art and fabrics of the Basotho, Swazi and Ndebele people and their respective fashion identities. Let us show you:
"SWAZI"
Kanga designs are typically a rectangular piece of fabric and bordered evenly on all four sides . Swazi Kangas follow this structure and feature bold primary colours with simple graphic details. Traditionally kangas are worn by Swazi women. Kangas are incredibly versatile and can be used as a skirt, head-wrap, apron, pot-holder, towel, and much more.
"NDEBELE"
Ndebele house painting is one of the most striking, recognisable and timeless art styles from South Africa. The straight lines and strict geometric structures are primarily painted by Ndebele women to represent deep symbolic meaning, indication of status in the home and even as a form of protest. Despite the deep cultural history and tradition of the style, new creative approaches are welcome, as long as they properly represent Ndebele culture.
"BASOTHO"
Originating from Lesotho, Basotho prints are often bold and colourful with intricate designs. These prints are most commonly found on thick wool blankets. Prized for their protective qualities from the cold, mountainous climate of Lesotho, these beautiful blankets are symbolic of identity and social status. They are also essential for traditional ceremonies and as gifts given to show respect and goodwill.
