A concept design refresh of the News24 mobile app

Goals:

Give the app a more custom, distinct look and feel

I aimed to achieve this by using the colours of the News24 logo more heavy-handedly. In addition to giving a more distinct look, this use of colour also results in the app having a "dark mode" by default, which will be easier on readers’ eyes.

Make the app more user friendly

I went about this by making two subtle changes: 1. Making the buttons more distinct by having them all be a contrasting colour (white) from the background, and 2. Separating the profile settings from the content panels by moving them up to the header and making them an overlay.

Bring the focus to the content

In order to achieve this I began with simplifying the interface by making more careful use of font sizing and proportions. I then removed the weather widget from the header and the multiple News24 logos from the article view, as I felt those were unnecessary and detracted from the content. I also removed the sign up and subscription buttons from the header, as I felt that having them in the profile settings overlay was sufficient. (If News24 want to more strongly encourage users to sign up and subscribe, I feel that a full screen panel on app startup would be more suitable.)
