Push & Pull Blocks

Push & Pull Blocks

The design process started by asking a sample block of material what it wants to be, how it would like to exist, what the materials themselves can offer and how they can exist within the context of our living space and our tablescape? How innovative digital fabrication techniques can be involved in the development or how existing methods can be subverted to achieve a desire outcome?

Push & Pull Blocks was the creative outcome of this design process, created from a solid block of acrylic material, undergoing a CNC milling and sand-blasting process to achieve a soft and spongy character, breaking the definitive of a solid and hard representation of a solid block of acrylic. The design of Push & Pull Blocks creates an illusional effect that somehow tricks the mind to interpret what the object is supposed to be through sensory stimulation, but in reality, it is the direct opposite effect.

Push & Pull Blocks was one of the design exhibits for Object Around the Tablescape Exhibition in SIngapore Design Week, SingaPlural 2017.

The exhibition exhibits a spin-off collections of d.lab - "Objects Around the Tablescape", focuses on the visceral and emotive quality of materials, such as translucency, texture, weight, the way it feel, the way it catches light and shadow, the way it interacts with the surrounding in which the object is being place.
