ALHAMBRA ( الْحَمْرَاء )
SPAIN
Build in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar and, since then, went thru so many events throughout history. Alhambra, which means "Red Fortress," is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world, in addition to containing notable examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. It was abandoned for centuries, and one day an American romantic, Washington Irving, with his friend, Russian prince Dimitri Dolgorukov, worked for years to restore the dignity the Alhambra deserved. As he quoted "Perhaps there never was a monument more characteristic of an age and people than the Alhambra; a rugged fortress without, a voluptuous palace within; war frowning from its battlements; poetry breathing throughout the fairy architecture of its halls."
It said that the tilework in the palaces is pure symmetry, and not a single corner fails to adhere to mathematical principles!
Exploring Alhambra is like being inside "someone" mind. All the architectural features, such as the pillar, curve, room layout, ornaments, scripts on the walls, and even the garden, are very well thought out; I can spend a whole month enjoying every corner of the building. To me, it seems like the fortress is a wise living person! Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
