Final Covers and Title Page Designs
for the Griffith Architecture EOY Catalogue
This project was submitted to and undertaken in the Liveworm Studio.
The Griffith Architecture School needed cover concepts for 2022-2024.
Concept Prompt:
I think that what keeps us together is a willingness to have students
with a social/environmental AWARENESS; to be OPERATIVE designers,
RESPONSIVE to the acquired awareness.
This is in some way aligned with the Griffith University marketing slogan
"make it matter" and distinguishes us from Bond University.
My concept for the Architecture School EOY Catalogue is inspired by topographic maps.
I decided to design away from the typical building and geometric designs that are expected
for architectural design. The abstract and natural style of topographic maps highlights
the extensive potential of architecture. Topographic maps are an important part of architecture,
connecting to the land. Additionally, this also connects to the theme of awareness.
The map is from a national park in the Sunshine Coast. I wanted to find a map
with a range of layers to have a real differentiation in heights.
The colours were specifically chosen by the client. They wanted a natural colour palette,
and supplied me with these colours. It was intended to have spot foil on the text and topographic lines.
Iterations
First Iteration
This first concept submission was chosen by the client, meaning I got to continue on with the job.
The first iteration was an edited scan of my tracing of the topographic map. I had originally pitched
for the title to be Conscious as it is a synonym of all three key words they had supplied. The client
did not approve this title. I had the colours vibrant to make the map lines stand out. I chose green
and blue to be related to nature, and the purple complimented them. I enjoyed the neon effect
that the colours created and wanted to push the brief as much as possible. I wanted to see how far
I could veer from the classic minimalism that architects love. These were also not approved.
The client wanted a natural/ neutral colour palette.

Second Iteration
This the next iteration with a more natural colour palette, digitised map lines, and new titles.
I submitted three versions. One the client would like, one we would both like, and one that I prefer.
They ended up picking the third version, which was the one I liked, which was a surprise.
Later however, they did want to change the colours. This was a good decision because I hated
the colours, they were too dull and uninteresting. I am glad they didn't pick the first two options
and the title used was: Be Aware, Be Responsive, Be Operative. It was the set title we were given
if we didn't want to pitch a title. It was too chunky and complex to make a successful title.
