AKIRA - Book Cover

My entry in a student competition to design the BFI cover for the classic anime film 'AKIRA'.

The brief was to interpret the themes of the film in an illustrative cover. I've used this brief to experiment and push the boundaries of my typography. The splattered type reflects the anarchistic nature of Tetsuo, and the cities radical followers of Akira. Similar graffiti can be seen on walls throughout the film and is symbolic of the rebellion. The white on the black background is representative of the postive x negative (ying and yang) overarching theme throughout the film, with the red caligraphy representing the radical change Tetsuo goes through before merging with Akira. The lines and strokes were also trying to emphasise tire tracks from the bikes the gangs use.
