Creating a flag

Travail réalisé en 2020 - Work done in 2020

Le but de ce travail est de regrouper sous un seul et même drapeau les différences de deux pays.

Mon concept de drapeau se base sur le cliché (très exagéré) de l’extravagance du peuple américain s’opposant à la zénitude de la population japonaise.

Voici le projet conceptuel qui a amené plus tard à la réalisation du drapeau.

The objective of this work is to bring together the differences of two countries under one flag.

My flag concept is based on the (highly exaggerated) cliché of the extravagance of the American people versus the "zen" of the Japanese population.

This is the conceptual project that later led to the realisation of the flag.

Le Japon est représenté par la barre horizontale du Yen, par la porte Shinto et le cercle faisant écho au drapeau officiel.
Les États-Unis sont symbolisés par les barres verticales du Dollar, par les bouts de tissus extravagants et les étoiles présentes sur le drapeau officiel.

Les barres de tissu rouge rappellent la porte de Shinto mais également le bâtiment de la Cour suprême des États-Unis. Cela symbolise le point de rencontre des deux pays, sous lequel se développe les deux idées opposées d’extravagance et de zénitude.

Dans ce drapeau conceptuel, chaque pays a son sens de lecture.
La partie japonaise se lit verticalement avec la barre du Yen à l’horizontal.
La partie américaine se lit quant à elle horizontalement. De cette manière, les étoiles se retrouvent "à l’endroit" et les barres du Dollar à la verticale.

Japan is represented by the horizontal bar of the Yen, the Shinto gate and the circle echoing the official flag.
The United States is symbolised by the vertical bars of the Dollar, the extravagant pieces of cloth and the stars on the official flag.

The red fabric bars are reminiscent of the Shinto gate but also of the US Supreme Court building. This symbolises the meeting point of the two countries, under which the two opposing ideas of extravagance and zen are developed.

In this conceptual flag, each country has its own reading direction.
The Japanese part is read vertically with the Yen bar horizontally.
The American part reads horizontally. In this way, the stars are "right side up" and the dollar bars are vertical.

Pour les couleurs utilisées, je suis resté très proche des drapeaux officiels. Du fait que je voulais réaliser la porte de Shinto en rouge, j’ai choisi un fond bleu afin de rappeler le drapeau américain.

J’ai ensuite poché les symboles en blanc pour différentes raisons. Techniquement, c’est la couleur qui offrait le meilleur contraste sur le bleu et le patchwork de tissus. De plus, le blanc symbolise l’unité et je ne voulais pas mettre les symboles des deux pays en opposition avec la couleur.

For the colours used, I stayed very close to the official flags. Since I wanted to make the Shinto gate in red, I chose a blue background to remind the American flag.

I then stenciled the symbols in white for different reasons. Technically, it was the colour that offered the best contrast on the blue and the patchwork of fabrics. Also, white symbolises unity and I didn't want to put the symbols of the two countries against the colour.
