Cardboard Sculpture

I got the inspiration for this work from the 'oji' drum and dangling anklets worn by the 'Atilogu' dancers of west Africa; The from is shaped like the oji drum with a little distortion. The top of the form has a surface that exactly resembles the drums surface but with alternating colors and texture. Around the form, is a carefully woven cardboard that mimics the shape and form of the anklet worn by the atilogu dancers. This anklet jangles as the dancers move and dance.

The form, when lifted, makes a sound that changes constantly as the position changes. This portrays the sounds made by the atilogu dancers when they dance and the beads in their anklets jangle. The form of a bird is seen on one edge of this sculpture. The bird seems to be flying towards the starry designs pattern. This pattern of the stars was created using the African Ankara fabric that dates back to the 18th century. The bird portrays the lavishness of the atilogu dancers when they dance. They dance freely and without restraints just like bird fly without any restriction. The red strip across the piece shows the headgear worn by prestigious atilogu dancers in a group. This kind of headgear is also seen on the leaders.

This piece has that red piece because it is a leader, a masterful masterpiece and an epitome of magnificence. There are a lot about to talk about each part of this sculpture. Each piece was carefully chosen and added to create the overall mystifying and sometimes confusing effect of this piece. Each part has a great significance and adds to the completeness of this work.
