HAIR STUDY / 36 HOURS / Pencil and graphite on 9" x 12" Cold Pressed Watercolor paper / Scanned and edited in Photoshop
Though the first couple of hours are a struggle, drawing hair puts me in a meditative and zen state. The more I test my patience with repetitive strokes, I'm often rewarded with certain realizations.
Upon researching, I stumbled multiple articles on the history around cornrows. As much as they represent someone's religion, background, marital status etc (this varies on culture), some designs were used as escape maps from slavery. For more information search "Bioho / Colombia / Braids".
