Consumerism
⏐economic system that supports the purchase of ever-increasing amounts of goods and services
Consumerism promotes increasing the consumption of goods and services purchased in the market.
Consumption is commonly used to describe the tendency of people living in a capitalist system to indulge in a lifestyle of excessive materialism based on reflexive, wasteful, or excessive overconsumption. In an economic sense, it is related to the idea that consumer spending is the key driver of the economy and that encouraging consumers to spend is a major policy goal.
People buy things not necessarily because they need them, but because they want certain things.
While some regard this as acceptable or beneficial to the economy, others say it fosters mindless spending.

Consumerism is a hot topic, particularly in the fashion industry. One way that consumerism may benefit the fashion industry is through the stuff that customers purchase. Although brands do not rule our lives, subconsciously they influence us a lot and our purchase choices do depend on the advertisements we see in our daily lives. Some people do recognise it and try to buy brands that are worth the price and some others fall into the trap of branded goods that aren't even worth but still buy expensive stuff.
The rat race of chasing the tag starts from right here. The pressure of upholding a so called standard influences us and makes us want luxury goods with a name tag just to seek validation.

The real question is why do we depend on these tag to seek validation & what standards do we really want to reflect.
