2-minute remix of Squeak The Squirrel

Digital Design Project: Time | Video Remix
SQUEAK THE SQUIRREL
Role(s): Video Editor
Tool(s): Adobe Premiere
Brief:
Design a video using an old video clip and separate voice over using Adobe Premiere Pro with basic editing technique.

Theme/Genre: Comedy and Action

Aim:
Create a time-based experience and make the audiences feel amuse and excited through the fundamentals of temporal audio-visual structure. This idea was motivated by movies that use the slapstick method such as Charlie Chaplin and Pink Panther.

Approach:
Analyse the existing content and look for key moments that can be used to interpret a new meaning by watching the original video and listening to the audio separately

The primary aesthetic choices:
1. Match the audio source with the visual clip (movement mapping)
2. Accentuate each movement with sound effects
3. Create a slapstick effect

Storyline:
A Squirrel plays around the grasses, then sneak inside the house to steal nuts. It struggles several times before learning the right trick.

The Power of Sound
Reactive and Volitional Audio-Visuals Relationships:

When the sound is off, our eyes will instantly focus on the brighter side. On contrary, when there is no sound or movement, our focus will be shifted to the movement or the sound source.
Based on the example pictures, if there is no sound or movement, human eyes tend focus on the surroundings because of the light contrasts. However, if the squirrel moves and makes some noise, our eyes will focus more on the squirrel.
Sound Design
There are several sound effects used in this video, such as rustling grass, heartbeat, clock, laughing, and ambience sounds. These sound effects are used to increase audience immersion.

Speed & Rhythm
In the time design project, I use quick cuts to produce a fast scene. You can see the example of it in the squirrel running scenes.
Fade to black is used in the hiding scene to give a moment of silence.
Crossfade is used when moving from scene to scene to give it a seamless transition.
