Festival Plus - explore, play & enjoy
Festival Plus is an interactive and gamified experience designed to engage people in the Locarno Film Festival to discover six relevant places in the city, and learn about facts and curiosities related to those places through an interactive installation. The games’ concept is about Locarno’s history: the flood in Piazza Grande, the Castello Visconteo, and the railways, and the Festival’s history: the rain, the Grand Hotel park, and the old projection booth.

Festival Plus is made of an app with six games and an interactive installation that consists of seven interactive screens. Our idea is based on discovery and the element of surprise. The discovery of the invisible in the visible, where the unknown is always moveable - the more we discover the more we want to know. Therefore, we thought of creating an experience which is attractive and fun.

The App
To play the games, players have to download a QR code once they are in Locarno. Each game has a particular location and the players need to position themselves in the right spot in order to start the game. Our two games developed for this project are Piazza in Flood and Rainy Days. When players reach the spot they are sent a notification, and then they’re introduced to a short story about each game. In order to play they have to find a tool through an AR scanning. Lastly they complete the objective set with a timer. When each game is completed, players upload their results and continue to the next one which has the same setup. The results are updated on the leader board screen which is the first part of the main installation.

The Installation
After completing the games, they can find the screens relevant to the game with further content. Each screen has its own content and a touch bar to interact with, where one person can interact at a time. The screen we have designed has the following interactions: swiping up and down to see the content based on three years, swiping right and left to know more, and zooming in and out for images and videos.
