Design for a Limited Edition Music Album

This project was a design for a collectible edition of one of Death Cab for Cuties albums, 'Plans'. The album I designed contains a series of bespoke illustrations based on and inspired by each song. The illustrations were drawn by hand and cut out using paper cut technique. I first became interested in this method of illustration after a college trip to Shanghai. The typography is hand lettered and forms an integral part of the overall image and meaning.

As the music industry moves increasingly towards a digital model, physicality becomes diminished. In addition to this, less emphasis is placed on the visual dimension of an album. The central idea behind this collectible edition is to visually reconnect the listener with the music, as well as restore concepts of physicality through the use of handmade paper cut illustrations. Growing up, one of my favorite parts of music was to collect the visual art, enjoy the artists' interpretations, and watch the stories unfold. I believe that it is something that means a lot to the people who enjoy music, and something I hope I have achieved through these illustrations.
