ABOUT

FRESCO is a coffee shop in the heart of Rome. Italian coffee culture is a form of art. It is impossible to imagine an Italian without a cup of espresso in hand and a passionate discussion about the morning news.

CONCEPT

Every stone in Rome is an object of cultural heritage. Thus, we could not ignore the historical layers that have remained as a shadow of the ages both literally and figuratively. The surviving frescoes and parts of the mosaics on the walls set the design vector towards working with local history, materials and typical Italian images.
CONSTRUCTION

The surviving wall of paintings requires an appropriate attitude from architects and restorers. The frescoes have been created approximately during the reign of Pope Clement VII, and are particularly unique to this region. Protective glass screens are provided in addition to traditional restoration procedures. However time consumed some details of the interior. In order to avoid damage to the wall frescoes, all work related to the production of equipment and interior details was prefabricated at the factory and assembled on site
DESIGN

Based on the features of the premises, the idea was changing during the design stage. It was important not to harm or prejudice the given, to strike a balance between design and historical heritage. The work was carried out in conditions of very small dimensions of the space with insufficient penetration of natural light. The most suitable material for the required image was the common Roman stone - travertine. It is unpretentious,  and perfectly emphasizes the wall picture. With this stone, it was possible to successfully fit the design idea into the body of the historical heritage. The idea of filling space was born in simple intersections of geometric forms.
The bar counter,  wc's "cube" and small coffee tables, produced in a single material, are the formative base of the design, and transparent chairs and stools dissolve in space drawing attention to the frescoes and to the material, helping you to dissolve in the atmosphere of Rome. With this interior you can see how the modern Italy meet the antique and they go well together, united by the coffee, pastries and culture.
