In addition to the heavy deposits of dirt, the canvas had a hole and seven tears. 

Done:

Painting was cleaned and consolidated. Alterations fixed, varnish removed. Restoration proved the sky was blue, not gray. Painting varnished and retouched. The back side was cleaned of old glue, labels and stickers were removed, tears fixed and strengthened with silk.
