Wellington Walkways
Three relaxing walks covered in Wellington’s beautiful scenery.
2021 University Project
This project asked us to highlight an aspect of Wellington which is overlooked. This project aims to show three walking tracks within the Wellington region. Each harbors a different experience, a walk in the bush, a stroll along the seaside or a battle against the wind along the hilltop. All worth escaping into your backyard to enjoy.
Exposed Dry Lands

Flowering gorse, prickly thistles,
unforgiving ridge lines litter the skyline.

The skyline walkway stretches across Karori, Wilton, Ngaio and Johnsonville measuring 13.4 kilometres in total, although can be completed in stages, through exposed hilltops and forest. It is a dual track which runs North and South along the ridge between Old Coach Road in Johnsonville and Makara Saddle in Karori.
Costal Crumbling Cliffs

Seaweed soup, mussels clinging to the rocks,
wind-blown scrubs, come and visit Oruaiti Reserve.

Oruaiti Reserve has several walking tracks, including a loop walk, and excellent views of the harbour from the ridge. The track to the ridge is on the undeveloped steep hillside and can be accessed from the middle of Breaker Bay Beach, and the Pass of Branda or Churchill Park.
Native Botanic Gardens

Experience the native forest-filled
with kaka, tawa and rimu trees.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush is the only botanic garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants. This unique plant sanctuary and forest reserve consists of 100 hectares of native forest and five hectares of plant collections.
