For this final assignment we were asked to create an illustation that showed who we are as an artist. I decided to do a character design, since that is my pasion.

My first idea was to create a harpy lady, but I quickly knew that I was just not loving this idea. I do a lot of this sort of thing and I wanted to push myself a bit more and to not play it safe. My teacher suggested I tried my hand at creating a creature/monster design and I imediatly went to work.

I made these sketches and the first three didn't really do it for me ( the top left, bottom left and bottom right.) So I took a step back and made some bullet points on what I like in a creature. Big, fluffy, the patern of an owl, gremlin energy and the unseteling smile of the Chasire cat. and that's how the sketch at the top right came to be.

This is the final design. and I'm really happy with the end result. I first cleaned up the first sketch and then went on to lineart. Color choice was pretty easy and it was fun to do the spots on the fur. I do wish it had more of the original expression in the first sketch. I think the nose that I added is what changed it.

And lastly a mock-up of how this could look on the festival.

It doesn't look as fancy as the others at the festival, but I'm happy with what I was able to come up with.

I really liked this assignment, because it gave us so much freedom to do what we wanted to do and show what we are best at. I'm really grateful for my teacher because he pushed me into the right direction when I was stuck on what to do. 

for next time, don't over think and ask for help a little earlier.
