The thorn bug is an occasional pest of ornamental plants and fruit trees. His tall, sex-changing, horn discourages birds and other predators from eating it, if only by mistakenly confusing it with a thorn.

This long arborescent processionary disguise itself by blending in with the host plant's leaf veins. Maximum camouflage is achieved when the caterpillar orients itself so that the dorsal midline of its body is exactly aligned with the midrib of the host plant's leaf.
