Alumnium Gyro is a three-layered gyroscopic cube. Through specific metal joints, each layer of the cube is isolated and spins freely by itself, creating a gyroscopic effect. The Gyro is a consolidation of the various techniques learnt during my Sophomore Metals I class. The only design guideline for this final project is to make a cubic form with an edge of between 2.5" to 3.5". A spatial composition of points, lines, planes and volumes is created using a combination of sheet, rod and tube metal. Thus, the form of the cube is defined while retaining an open, breathing space. The end result is pleasing to sight and touch while static, and when set in motion adds a layer of interactivity, sound and playful intrigue.
The project evolved over time from starting from separate fragments. Through an iterative process of synthesis and editting, it progressed towards its final form.
Sketches from ideation to finalization of details and construction methods.
Illustrator was first used to find the exact dimensions of the cube. In total the sheet aluminium patterns went through 6 iterations to reach the final design.
