HMP Buckley Hall Restorative Justice identity

An identity design plus supporting print material for HMP Buckley Hall’s restorative justice programme. Restorative justice involves bringing offenders face-to-face with their victims, enabling them to explain how the crime has affected them. The identity is primarily to be used internally within the prison itself on advertising material aimed at inmates, but will also feature on material sent out to victims, communities and local authorities and organisations.

Taking the process of restorative justice literally, I used the concept of a ring, representing community, and divided into two. One half represents offenders, the other, victims. By bringing the two halves together, you can restore it. Each segment of the ring also represents an abstracted letterform, one an r, the other a j. A bold green is used as a power colour. It is vibrant, and represents growth, progress, and moving forward.
In addition to the identity, I also designed a basic style guide for online and print support material, including versions with and without background imagery.
The 45˚ intersection within the identity, combined with the primary green colour, can be utilised for striking crops of imagery.
