Ponder the Comb.

Ponder the Comb.
What's going on here?
Here you can see a series of images that have one thing in common: combs. Illustrating 7 Design Principles, these photoshopped images reflect the world from a different perspective... a well-groomed perspective, if you will.

Want to know what they are?

They are as follows, starting from the top left:

Material Change, Swap, or Focus
Here you can see the standard rooster with its trademark gobble and crown. Or is it? No, it's not. If you look closely, you'll see that the crown of this bird has been swapped with a comb. The comb has been made to look like it belongs by swapping the material!

Metaphor/Simile
If you cannot figure out what metaphor is happening here... I'll show mercy. It is a combover! The hair gradually turns into the teeth of the comb, creating the illusion that it is a literal comb-over.

Isolation
This image illustrates isolation as the lone, isolated comb-brush scrubs away at the large white expanse. So lonesome.

Combination
Here we see that a piano and a comb has been combined together. It is the weakest of the lot, but the goal is to do a double-take. You can see that it's a piano, but something seems different about it. This would be because it's actually a comb.

Physical Shape/Similarity
What do a rake and a comb have in common? Anything? No takers? Alrighty, well if you couldn't tell, they look exactly the same. Hence why it may be more difficult to see that something has happened here, if not for the watermark and intense shadow on the top.

Juxtaposition
Surprise! Are you surprised? I should hope so. Juxtaposition builds off of combination but is meant to have an "aha!" moment included. Here you can see that this comb indeed has teeth-- but not the normal set of teeth that usually comes with a comb.

Change of Context or Environment
This comb has a sad story. Not only is this a combination of the venus comb shell and an actual comb, but it's to illustrate adaption to environment. What environment? Try the polluted ocean!

Sketches, Doodles, and More
Illustrator is a great tool for creating renditions of assets you have collected and testing what they could look like. Original images were used to create the basis for these, and I hope they are pretty self-explanatory. You can see why some didn't make it and others did. I wanted to find things that were cheeky, fun, and easy to recognize.
Here are some simple brainstorm sketches that are further behind the illustrations. You can see that I started a word web but moved onto actual sketches with attached names. I didn't get too far here before I moved onto the picture assets to create renditions in photoshop and illustrator.

Ponder the Conclusion.
Conclusively, the comb can be used for many things in the world. If you like what has been shared here, let me know. If not, let me know. These 7 principles of design are useful for creating ideas.
