Dr. Robert Crawford's profile

Researchers Study Association rAAA & Cardiac Arrest

A former associate program director at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Robert Crawford has leveraged his MD to obtain decades of experience in vascular surgery. Currently the director of medical affairs at Basis Medical, Dr. Robert Crawford has participated in several published studies. One of these was a study on the repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) in patients who had undergone preoperative cardiac arrest. It was published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery in November 2016.

Preoperative cardiac arrest in patients with rAAA has long been associated with increased mortality. Because of this, the prognostic implications of preoperative cardiac arrest among patients with rAAA have been controversial. The Journal of Vascular Surgery study sought to evaluate aortic repair outcomes in patients with rAAA and cardiac arrest.

Researchers conducted a systematic literature review of past studies and narrowed their focus down to 16 of them involving 2,669 patients with rAAA. Of these, 34 percent had preoperative cardiac arrest. Researchers found that patients who had cardiac arrest had a more elevated risk of mortality (86 percent) compared to patients who did not have cardiac arrest (44 percent). However, researchers found that it was not inhibitive of aortic repair. They concluded that surgeons could prescribe aortic repair in patients with rAAA who were reasonable candidates if the resources for emergency surgery were available.
