Old Dusty font presentation

Old Dusty

Old Dusty is a font originating from an old serif font but is more of a decorative type itself. As the name suggests, it is covered in dust and debris referring to the inspiration used for it. It was created as a part of my university assignment.

the idea

The idea for this font was found on an old memorial. There were a few things I learned whilst I tried tracing the original letters to recreate the font used. It was not an easy task as most of them differed in size and shape but the longer I worked on it the more I grew to appreciate that. I found it quite charming that you could easily tell it was carved by human hand so I have decided to embrace that instead of trying to standardize all letters. Thanks to that they get to keep their unique and handmade character.

The other thing I really wanted to keep was their antique atmosphere. Seeing aging with the passage of time is also another aspect that makes it feel human and so I decided to add grain to make them look older and sort of damaged. I even designed a few versions of empty spaces to use in between them to use when needed.

The end result is exactly what I wanted to achieve. Text written with the font looks old, handmade. It provides the places where I've used it with a sense of mystery and humanity.
