Once only served behind closed doors, “O Provador” (The Taster), a port based on a secret blend of Reserve Tawny that the legendary Cockburn's taster and much-loved “Cowboy of the Douro”, John Smithes, produced for himself and his colleagues to enjoy as part of their long laid-back lunches and visits to the sun-drenched vineyards of Quinta dos Canais.
I was invited by Cockburn’s to design the label, the packaging and to create a mural on the Cockburn’s wine cellars to celebrate the launch of the wine. The design process was inspired by O Provador’s irreverence and his love for the Douro and its people. The images represent the Douro Valley, Porto and some of the region’s eccentric sayings – paired with the playful Cockburn’s humour.
