By having community members participate in actual research the scientific outcome can be much more powerful that just gathering data. For example via a range of communication channels the general public can be informed about an environmental problem (litter pollution in this case), and thereby in turn push policy makers to enable environmental friendly legislation.

This figure was published in the book chapter "Marine litter - bringing together citizen scientists from around the world" by Thiel et al. 2018 (Routledge), ISBN 9781315638966
I developed the figure starting with a rough idea on paper.


Later I drew the individual figure elements and redrew them in inkscape.
