Hackberry Collage
This piece is a collage of live paintings done at a Hackathon, which is a four hour competition with no rules but to make something. The painting is dedicated to the creativity and hard work seen in Hackberry (the lab used by Creative Technologies students). The painting includes nine portraits and one easter egg (inside joke) unicorn. The only pre-sketches done were the seven circles featured as they form the Hackberry Logo.
Finally I was able to complete three out of four corners with a portrait of Elizabeth making a leather dress. I included some of the backgrounds to add more interest to the piece. The bottom right corner is a portrait of
After the lower left portraits I moved up to finish out the top of the canvas. Gauging the size of each portrait relative to the time allotted was probably the most difficult part of this process. I finished the portrait of Sydney and Malynn working on a collapsible dice tower.
Moving forward from my teacher, I started gaining more confidence in my ability to paint the portraits in ~20 minutes. The furthest left portrait is of Thomas, our lab director, writing code for his project. His portrait has the most color changes and presented the unique challenge of making the faces cohesive using different values. Moving down I painted Rosa as she wrote code for a game.
Starting in the bottom right corner with a full body portrait caused some concern. The portrait was unrecognizable and presented the color changing challenges. Because the painting was so thick, I moved on to the next portrait before revisiting it. I painted my good friend Molly as she made a Fusion 360 model for her hackathon project. The third, more center, project is the beginnings of my teacher Chris Whitmire.
To select the people I painted for this project I created a Google Forms page. The Hackathon attendees could enter their name to be painted and were randomly selected.
