Visual Identity for the Pacific Fisher

When I had trouble getting an idea for my final project in a class, I decided to create a visual identity for an endangered animal. With the creation of a brand identity for an endangered species, I hope to raise awareness for that animal in a non-standard and pervasive manner. Products to which the brand identity is applied should demonstrate ecologically-friendly materials and alternatives to forested wood.  This can include recycled paper products, recycled lumber, recycled glass, and recycled metal.

Such an identity could be used in a fundraising campaign for conservation efforts or simply to increase awareness in a community about local wildlife and the ecosystem around them. New companies, particularly those involved with outdoor activities, could be given the opportunity to adapt an animal’s brand identity for their company.  In turn, the company would include information about the animal and conservation efforts on its website and other marketing materials.

This particular identity was designed for the Pacific fisher, which goes by several names including pekan (a Canadian-Indian name for the animal). This creature is in the weasel family and lives in large tracts of old-growth forest. The fisher is a clever hunter and one of the few animals known to successfully hunt porcupines. Fishers used to be heavily trapped for their fur pelts. Now, logging and land development in old-growth forests disrupts the Pacific fisher’s habitat. Conservation of land and other resources can help save the Pacific fisher by preserving it’s habitat.
I’d like to give a special thanks to PSDcovers.com for their wonderful FREE Photoshop Actions. It’s a pretty sweet resource, so check it out if you’re interested in making product mock-ups.
