AYA Music Box brings together the old and the new world through sounds and three-dimensional animations.
Having as an objective to redesign a classic object by introducing a modern technology into it we decided to work on a Swiss design product - the music box. Together with my team, we added both manual and digital interaction through our phones and substituted classical dancing figures with holograms.
The music box is made of four parts. On the top there is the mechanism which is inspired by the original music boxes. The handle is used for rotating the lead screw that moves through two ball bearings. A thread nut with a pin is screwed onto that lead screw. As we rotate the handle, the pin slides over the lead screw to reach the buttons. Next to the handle we have the drum that, being 3D printed, emits just a mechanical sound.
In the second layer a smartphone serves as a trigger for the digital interactive interface. The third layer is for a second phone which projects the hologram and emits the melodies. As the two phones are mirrored, by pressing the buttons on the top one, we animate the hologram and the music from the second.
Whereas, the fourth part (bottom) of the box contains the hologram projections.
The user needs two smartphones, one used as a button panel, and the other to listen to the melody and see the projection. The mobile phone must be mirrored together. One of them has to be placed face-up, and the other flipped over. Once the telephones are set up the digital interface begins.
As a result, just like in a classical music box, the user can rotate the handle and choose a content with the pin which slides over the lead screw.
