Dramatic lighting

This project we learned how to digitally paint dramatic portraits. throughout the lessons we are taught a bit of color theory, shading and traditional esc paintings.

Exercise Painting
Of course we don't immediately jump into the deep with a traditional painting. We started off the project by shading basic shapes from the front, back and a different material to get used to painting digitally.

We got a basic template to work with, a few new photoshop brushes and explanation on the history of portraits.

Start up
After we finished the exercise we started our model search, I used a website which has a ton of posing people. it took a bit but then I finally found the reference I wanted to have, dramatical pose, colorful lighting and everything clear.

So I started free hand sketching the reference's pose, then I cleaned up that sketch for the painting to start.

Final Portrait process
After I sketched the general shape. I started painting the darkest color, then slowly adding lighter and lighter colors. at first it was too red and a blob but later it started getting more and more shape.
In the final part, I did the background and added some dark of the background onto the model.

Reflection
When I look back upon the project, for once I must say I really enjoyed it. for me it was extremely calming not caring too much about the final result but just calmly painting away.

although now certain things could've been better. like the basic shapes metal material, you can clearly see that I spend less time shading it and that its more rushed. and with the final painting certain lines became too cartoony.

but with that said I am really proud of the painting as its really cool. I really like the hand and shaded parts, looks really realistic and clean. so I must say this project is a success.
