Harp of the Absurd

In my Graphic Design class, we were assigned to create two posters that showed an instrument of our choice that depicted a sense of deception or an impossible situation. Our poster had to have the title of "Cello of the Absurd", "Violin of the Absurd", etc.

After brainstorming two ideas, I chose to go with a harp. I loved both ideas I had, but the snake seemed easier to simplify and be able to finish in the time for the deadline.

I made the connection between the harp and snake due to the movement of the snake and flowing between the shape of a harp and a snake. I liked the idea of warping something so elegant and beautiful into something that represents danger and deception.

I started out by creating the original form of the harp then adapting the shape to create a snake. After some adjustments, I began my first poster. I wanted fonts that really represented both the elegance and classical side of the harp, as well as the absurdness of the the work itself. I also found a few color schemes, but ended up falling in love with the dark peach and went with that. After reorganizing and reshaping the harp and type, I found a poster I enjoyed.

Once I finished the first poster, I began my second. I kept the typefaces because they were very fitting to the design. I then reorganize the poster itself as well as create a different color scheme.

I thought it would be fun for the snake to be eating itself to create repetition.
After my class critique, my classmates enjoyed the simplicity, but thought I could push the first poster a bit more. Everyone enjoyed my choice of color scheme as well as typefaces.

I will have to push my first poster a bit more soon, but overall, I really enjoyed making this project and am very happy with how it turned out.
