Introduction

The aim was to explore and study the methods and design language, of any architect / designer / artist, what are their ethics, key preferences and common elements of their design.
Then use the study to design any furniture or product or structure in their form language.
I chose Lawrence Wilfred "Laurie" Baker a British-born Indian architect, renowned for his initiatives in cost  effective energy-efficient architecture and designs that maximized space, ventilation and light and maintained an uncluttered yet striking aesthetic sensibility.
Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his own experiences in the remote Himalayas, he promoted the revival of regional building practices and use of local materials; and combined this with a design philosophy that
emphasized a responsible and prudent use of resources and energy.
Design Language

• minimalistic
• communicating with surrounding nature
• sustainability
• building low cost
• built for lower & middle class clients
• emphasise prolific
• virtuosic
• masonry construction evoking history
Concept & Ideation ( The Veranda )

By exploring the methods and design language, my concept is a canopy like structure around the IIT Hyderabad hostel circle for meeting, interaction, experiencing the harmony between nature and architecture.
It has a curvy wall structure so as to represent the flow in-between the curve of hostel block building structure.
The brick structure used is inspired by Laurie Baker’s jali brick technique to allow natural air flow and sunlight.
The roof gives reference to the Baker’s roof style of having a sense of flow and fluidity with protrusion in them.
