Hellhole sketches and preparation (2021)

First iteration of drafting for the final of a creature lab course. Assignment was to design 3 creatures and the environment they live in.

Reference and inspiration for the project.

Very early ideation process exploring which directions I want the project to go in. Asking broad questions about which paths would be most interesting. Focused on establishing what the setting should be.

Exploring this batlike creature a bit more, thinking about movement and reducing the human skeleton while keeping it identifiable.

Experimenting with the shapes and expressions of this deerlike creature. More refined decision-making.

Design process for the lizardlike creature. Experimenting with different skull shapes and inspirations.

Sketchbook draft of the final concept. Thinking about the final framing for the image and questioning if creature highlights or simple narrative should be included.

Cut paper draft to better visualize the final image. Lighting is design-based, not naturalistic, so trying to establish a cohesive visual language and sense of space becomes a focus going forward.

Work on the final image commences from this point, leading to a finished risograph print.
