CHILD´S PLAY

Children had not been my primary focus. However, the increasing

awareness of my future paternity became a new and additional

motivation to focus my attention on them. Introspectively, I took a

look at my childhood, a conservative and over-protected infancy of

imposed limitations and limited play.

I watched these children play and suddenly felt strongly attracted to

their lives. They ran with freedom and enjoyed life. Their extreme

poverty spurred their creativity, and everything became a toy … their

imagination and energy had no limits.

Gradually, I realized the pain disguised in the games they played.

They had suffered suicides, drug addiction, sexual and physical

abuse, illness, and the mental retardation of the youngest brother.

Innocent games became violent and aggressive at times. The love

and freedom that sometimes was reflected in their games, could

become the cruel image surrounding their lives.

This is “Child’s Play.”

JUEGO DE NIÑOS

“La serie “Juego de Niños nace de una mirada introspectiva a mi

infancia. Una infancia conservadora y sobreprotegida, con muchos

límites impuestos y juegos limitados.

Vi a estos niños jugar y, de repente, sentí una gran atracción hacia la

vida de ellos, corrían en libertad, gozaban de la vida. Su pobreza

económica los impulsaba a hacer de cualquier cosa un juguete, su

imaginación y energía no tenían límites. Poco a poco me fui dando

cuenta del sufrimiento detrás de esta cortina de juegos. Habían

convivido con suicidios, drogadicción, agresión física, enfermedades y el

retraso mental del hermanito menor. De ahí que juegos inocentes se

convirtiesen a ratos en violentos y agresivos. El amor y la libertad que a

veces se reflejaba en sus juegos, podían llegar a convertirse en la

imagen cruel que rodea sus vidas.
