Roar!!! Happy Chinese Tiger Year!

This is a fun personal character design challenge. I want to combine modern character design with realistic 3D materials. So this is my result! Please enjoy this video :)

Here are some key moments of this project.

Here is my process for making this art, below is a general workflow guideline of how this is being made.

CG Workflow Outline:

Step 1. Concepting: I first started with sketching in Procreate and then solidify my composition. This is an crucial step for designing what you want to make!

Step 2. Modeling: I brought my image into Autodesk Maya for modeling reference. This stage usually takes the most time. Below is a snap shot of me sculpting the sweater.

Step 3. Texturing: I love using @substance3dart for creating textures. It’s also fabulous for projecting your physical artwork into 3D. Here, I am doing a projection mapping from a scanned copy of my dad's Chinese Calligraphy into the 3D paper using Substance Designer.

Step 4. Shading: After generating textures, it is time to pull them back to Maya for creating materials, aka “shaders”!

Step 5. Lighting: This is my favorite part of the 3D art creation. I usually started with a HDRI lighting and then I added more lighting as I go. Usually less is more!

Step 6. Comping: I used Nuke from the Foundry Team for compositing. Things like retouching the highlights and toning down the reflections are great using #thefoundrynuke
