Castell Coch in the style of Eyvind Earle

Castell Coch, the fairy castle, in the style of Eyvind Earle for Disney's 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty. When I was young and we used to drive to my Grandparents in Ynyshir my Mother would always point out the fairy castle on the hill to me. I would stare up at it in amazement as we passed, imagining fairy princesses and a dragon curled up at it's base. In reality Castell Coch (Welsh for Red Castle) was originally built in a much simple form on a ground motte in 108. This original structure was abandoned, rebuilt in 1277, destroyed in a revolt and then aquired again as ruins in 1848 as part of a marriage settlement by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. Being quite the Victoria philanthropist, he comissioned William Burges (who also designed Cardiff Castle) to transform it into its current splendor. If you can please go and visit this magical castle, it's interiors are adorned with beautiful animal carvings and stunning victorian ideas of what a medieval castle should be.
