School of Architecture in Basel (Switzerland)
School+Business Incubator+Dorms
Thesis Project
THE INTERNATIONAL School of Architecture in Basel is a new building which provides new working spaces for worlwide senior students. Besides the school, a business incubator for recent graduates is meant to become a link between academia and workplace. The industrial surroundings serve as in inspiration for the School, which is a physical materialization of the mechanical metaphor of a ‘tank” and a ‘crank’.
The area of intervention is located 7km from Basel, on the right bank of the Rhine. It belongs to the german municipality of Grenzach-Wyhlen. The river itself is the border between Germany and Switzerland. The manufacturing facilities on the opposite bank shows the strongly industrial atmosphere of the area.
Despite close proximity to Basel, the city cannot be seen from the site and provides no helpful reference.A series of tanks and industrial facilities surrounds the construction site, which remains as a lonely island of nature among the human-dominated landscape.
