Solstice 2021 Animations

In June and December of 2021 I was compelled to experiment with digital hand-drawn animation.
First here is winter, the watercolor painting based on the Neolithic monument Newgrange, an astronomically-aligned tomb, and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ireland.  On the winter solstice, the first rays of light shine through a special window ("roofbox") above the main entrance, travel down the passageway and light up the back wall of the passage - from start to finish, a 17 minute event of Neolithic magic. The animation isn't quite accurate to how the light moves but I wanted to emphasize the flooding of returning, warming light.
My aunt Cathy here is depicted as a summer sun goddess, leaping over the bonfire in celebration of the height of the sun. This was photographed at a solstice event Harvard hosted years ago. One of my first animation projects.
