how i remember sacramento.
through the faces of my best friends after we spent a whole night laughing.
this is my best friend, nina. she's beautiful and brilliant and everywhere she goes the sunshine follows. she wanted to see the show that taylor and I had been talking about, but didn't get tickets when we did. so, almost a month later, she found one online in the same row but many seats down and she impulsively bought it because life is hers for the taking.
this is my other best friend, taylor. she's bold and wise and being with her is like being with someone you've known and loved for years, even if you had just met her yesterday. she's the first person I call when I see comedy tickets available in northern california, which says a lot about the company she is. she was the most hesitant about our impromptu photoshoot under the purple lights on the trees because she works the hardest to not make life all about her, but who could deny that yellow jacket with the soft purple light? she's the kind of beautiful that calls itself out. she drove nina and me to sacramento that night (we weren't planning to drink, but then nina got a little buzzed at dinner anyway, so it worked out).
this is a blackberry basil lemon punch bowl. it became my best friend. it was so tasty. I had a few, taylor had a few, nina had seven. we made reservations at this restaurant that then, when we arrived, was empty. but that's okay because it meant we got to enjoy the whole meal with as loud laughter as we wanted.
this is exactly how i want to remember sacramento. these impromptu pictures with my best friends as we walked back to the car, trying to find nina a safe restroom, laughing and dancing and smiling with each other two days before I came back to san diego.
(oh, also, we went to see hasan minhaj that night. he's from sac, so it was a nice hometown show. it was my second time seeing the show, saw it in san francisco first, and i'm going again in april to see him in san diego. needless to say, I highly recommend the show.)
nina and i have been taking this picture (meaning this pose) for years in several different places. it is the first time since we've become adults that we remembered to take this picture and it means so, so much to me.
