Ambition Project
This project was a preparation for an interview with a teacher from the education you're choosing for the following 3 years. I needed to convince them that I'm good enough for Digital Design & Motion, and together with my portfolio, this project will help me show that I am worthy of going there next year.
Personal Goals
I am quite the perfectionist, so I really wanted to make something that would blow everyone away and not make them question if I'm good enough for this education. I had big plans to design an entire game app for a Youtuber, but unfortunately that idea was way too big for me.
Brainstorm
First thing we did, was brainstorm with all the students that were choosing the same follow up education as me. I also wrote down some more ideas for myself which I liked best and sounded more interesting to me.
Feedback Moment
After my first plan of making a game app for a Youtuber didn't work out, I came up with the idea to make a 2D illustration of a screenshot of a 3D game. I had limited time left, so unfortunately I had to go with this drawing idea which was too easy and not original.
Feedback from my teacher was that it indeed didn't really show a lot of me as an artist. I was just going to draw the same thing but in a 2D style instead of 3D. She suggested I'd look around on Pinterest and see if I can show more of my own style
Research
First step was to take reference screenshots. I have the Pokémon Shield game, so I went to every interesting looking area and took some screenshots.
And then I chose an area. I went for the town Ballonlea, because the aesthetics of that town are beautiful. I love the darkness of the area with the bright neon colors glowing everywhere. That would be an interesting challenge to draw, so I went with that.
Moodboard
I made a small moodboard to show the 2D style I wanted to draw this illustration in.
Drawing the Illustration
I started off with a sketch, and then used Photoshop to draw the final illustration. I started off with the basic shaped, drew some more of the basic details and then started working on the real details.
I wanted to experiment using textured brushes to make the illustration look a bit more interesting and realistic. I started off with the trees and ground, and then drew all the details for the houses and the gym. I then drew the details on the mushrooms, and made the background a bit fuller so it has more depth. I drew some more smaller mushrooms and then gave all the mushrooms their glow.
Peer Feedback
While working on the project, we had to ask 2 classmates for feedback. This is also feedback for my portfolio.
End Result
Evaluation & Feedback
The end result is alright, it's not my best work, but the drawing itself is still pretty good. It just lacks originality, and that's also what the DDM teacher said. He mentioned 2 things: I need to show more process, and I need to make more original pieces. My portfolio was mainly made out of personal works I made before I got on this school, and almost all of it is fan art of a movie or game. But I know this will improve, because I'm going to make a lot of original artworks on this school.
My teacher, however, was very positive about this project. She gave me an Excellent. "What a fantastic process and project, you show very well how you got to your end result. You know how to bring everything together."
