"Be Mine" animated music video

I was hired to create an animated music video for Mary Ann Redmond's song "Be Mine." Here's the finished video.
After several conversations with the client, I pitched the concept of airships attacking the band and then bombing the desert with a twist. After the concept was approved, I put together an animatic. I do this to get the timing and compositions down as well as solidifying what assets need to be created.
Then it's time to make the assets... a lot of assets. I've put together a few of the exploded views. Basically, anything that moves, needs to be on a separate layer that overlaps another layer at the joint.
For example, if the face doesn't move (like the guitarist), then the whole head can be one layer, but if the character has different emotions like smiling and talking, then you'd need to break things up like the drummer's head. Notice the bass player's legs don't move, so they're all one layer, but the guitarist taps his foot to the beat of the music, so his left leg is broken up into three layers.
The following video explains how this works... or you can scroll down and see the exploded views of the characters.
Here's a few time lapse videos of me painting some stuff.
