The form of the bedside table lamp draws inspiration from a Japanese fan dance called Bon Odori. The consumer interaction is enhanced as the fan-folds of the lamp move rhythmically using the compound lever mechanism, allowing various actions to take place simultaneously. The light getting switched on coincides with the fan-fold opening up, both being the result of the band being pushed down by the user. The aim was to experiment with the generic switch button and the way a user interacts with it using the index finger. Incorporating the same function in a band requires it to be enclosed in the hand and then pressed down, creating a novel experience.

Twelve compound lever mechanisms are arranged radially along their spines to form the skeleton of the upper fan-fold. Pushing the band at the base of the lamp sets three things into motion.

Firstly, it applies pressure on all the pedals, lifting all the folds at once.
Secondly, along with the upward movement of the spines, a disc connected the spines with the wired light sources completes the circuit, switching on the light.
Thirdly, the band gets interlocked at its lowered position through cantilever snap-fit joints.
The band stays pressed down until pressed again, releasing it to regain its original position. Furthermore, pushing the band downward thus switches off the lamp and closes up the fan-fold simultaneously.

The form was achieved through multiple paper folding and origami explorations, proposing the final execution in Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material. Living hinges would be used for the construction of the form, allowing it to bend along each fold.
Replicating the simple mechanism used in a pedal dustbin, a circuit is integrated into the product, such that the upward movement completes it, switching on the three LED lights attached along the spine. Within the base, each pedal gets interlocked using snap-fit joints, which are released when the band is pressed again, breaking the circuit, switching off the lights, and closing the fanfold simultaneously.
