LINE UX/UI Redesign

What is LINE?
LINE is a freeware app for instant messaging, the most popular in the Japanese market. Launched soon after the Tōhoku earthquake struck in 2011, it was built as a response for the power outage that followed the catastrophe. Today, it has become a multiservice platform that includes social media, a digital wallet, news stream, video on demand and digital comic distribution.

Why do a redesign?
Despite it’s popularity, the rating in the Appstore Japan is only 2.8 stars. It’s important to understand the problems that users are currently facing with LINE, to be able to design a better experience.

Study Method
For the development of this project, I worked following The 5 Elements of User Experience introduced by James Garret. This model serves as a framework to understand the layers of user experience when addressing a digital product.

Value vs. Complexity Matrix
After finding the possible solutions and the features that will be improved, I ordered them based on their priority. To do this, I placed them in a table with two axes: Value (how important it is for the user) and Complexity (the effort required to deliver it).

Redesigning the Information Architecture
With the results of the tree test, the site map was modified trying to achieve the following points:
- Simplify the categories, to make the app easier to navigate
- Divide friends into groups, based on the research conclusions
- Unify the home screen with the chat, since is the most important section of the app
- Create a new category for the user’s profile
