PLATONIC ROACH

Imagine that you are a very busy architect student living in Costa Rica, you are arriving to your house with all you projects in hands and the ferocious need to pee, you leave everything behind while running to the toilet and when you open the door... There he is, the same shiny cockroach of every night on the sink waiting for you!
But what you didn't know is that he has a name, a tiny big heart and it has fallen in love with you. that's why he waits for you every night.

That's the story of Nadin and Raúl.

Platonic Roach is a project for a hypothetical animation show in the comedy and romantic genre and is intended for young adults.
Nadin's point of view on how they met.
This bathroom is shared between Nadin and her grandma, so the elements in there are inspired in my own grandma, her bathroom things and also my own bathroom in Costa Rica.
Raúl is a vibrant and funny little guy, Nadin on the other hand is really messy and shy, She has two designs for the show; one portraying what Raúl sees (a sexy, empowered goddess) and the real Nadin.
After having the bathroom and character designs I moved on to the production of the illustration, first I took a picture on how I envisioned the composition, then I made a thumbnail contemplating the background elements. Once happy with the composition I sculpted the background with basic 3D shapes for a size reference and made a sketch of the characters on top of a screenshot, when the proportions were accurate I drew the final line art and did a small light and contrast test. Finally I added the colors and the final light and details.
Raul's point of view on how they met.
I decided to make another illustration portraying Raul's feelings, at first I wanted it to be the same composition as before, but changed that idea because the attention was in Nadin and not him, these are some early sketches of that idea.
Because for me it was important to see the face of Nadin, I accommodated the frame to be just right for us to see her through the mirror.
At first, before taking the time to design everything prior to illustrate, I was working in this illustration, but because it felt like missing so much I went back and design the parts that were important for my story in order to have a more strong illustration at the end.
